3 Ways to Avoid Lack Consciousness in ‘Tough Economic Times’

![]() For the last two months I have been travelling and exposed to media messages I normally wouldn’t hear. At home I have convenient technology which allows me to record my favourite programs and fast forward through ads, news flashes or messages that aren’t aligned with my prosperity beliefs. What I noticed is a lot of talk about how bad the economy is from TV programs to ads to Facebook:
Do you jump on the bandwagon, not part-take or offer a different perspective? I feel like I live on another planet as I witness and experience a completely different reality. Instead of economic hardship I see abundance everywhere:
I truly believe we create what we focus on. So when I hear everybody jumping on the Global Financial Crisis bandwagon (it even has an acronym for goodness sake! GFC) I think each individual is collectively contributing to, and creating, the doom and gloom. In order for the financial situation, or any circumstance we no longer desire, to change we need to individually and collectively transform our focus from poverty to prosperity. Here are three tips to raise your abundance consciousness one thought at a time. 1. Evaluate What’s In Your World When I first met my husband he used to start his day at the local coffee shop enjoying a latte with friends. Robert is an inventor and entrepreneur and one day he shared a few conversational titbits on his friends’ comments about his work: “Why don’t you get a proper job?” “That idea will never work.” “You’ve been working on that for some time now, why don’t you just give up?” Imagine starting each day being fed soul destroying fodder? Consider the information you are receiving from friends, family, colleagues, society and the media. Do they support the type of life you want to create for yourself? If not, it may be time to start questioning the messages being sent your way. Take Action: Honestly consider your position in relation to the GFC and ask yourself, “How am I really being affected by the ‘crises’?” People who have experienced no change in their financial situation whatsoever are happy to perpetuate the negativity by talking about how bad the government is, the GFC and what’s wrong with the world for hours on end. They’re not helping improve the situation; they’re just fuelling the lack mentality. This takes us to the next point in escaping tribal mentality by not spreading lack consciousness through thoughts, words and feelings. 2. Avoid Contributing to Lack Consciousness My client Angela was an avid media consumer and just when you thought she would be in GFC seventh heaven something clicked. “I consumed the local, national and international news for years. I thought I was well informed because I watched and read a wide variety of media and I confidently discussed the issues because I felt well educated by all the expert opinions I’d come across. Then the financial crisis hit and I noticed something that didn’t sit right with me. The media were interviewing ‘experts’ who just months before were telling me the exact opposite information. Not only were they contradicting their previous viewpoint but they also failed to predict, commentate on or suggest ways that people like me could protect ourselves from the financial crisis. They were 100% wrong on what they’d reported just months before, but they’re still being dragged back for interviews and presented as authorities! I was so angry at myself, firstly for allowing myself to fall into the media mindset and also because I had been studying the law of attraction and my behavior was perpetuating the negative issues by talking about them to whoever would listen just so I could prove how ‘smart’ I was.” Angela felt like she had been duped, she trusted the information she was being given. But more importantly she realized she was spending dozens of hours each week consumed in issues she wouldn’t want in her life. Her experience teaches us a valuable lesson. Just because an adverse piece of news is topical, doesn’t mean it is correct or that you have to pass it on. Take Action: Evaluate your world and be mindful of what you let into your life or share and pass on to others. I’m often amazed at how often I receive joke emails that focus on making fun of others. I’d say only five percent of what I receive is inspirational and uplifting which I believe is a clear indication of what people are focused on. What difference would we see in the world if we spread messages that pulled people up instead of pushing them down? The change can start with you. 3. Take Responsibility In a recent interview I was asked what I believe contributed to the current financial crisis, my response, “Lack of accountability.” In almost 20 years of business consulting I have seen this debilitating behavior adversely affect people’s lives. In business if something isn’t working the front line person blames the supervisor, the supervisor then blames the manager, the manager blames the senior manager, the senior manager blames the CEO, the CEO blames the Board and the shareholders blame the whole lot of them for not being profitable. Imagine the difference in the world if we each took 100% responsibility for our lives? Employees would be fuelled with enthusiasm and want to question, contribute and improve instead of just make it to quitting time or the weekend. There is an ancient Hawaiian tradition called the Ho’oponopono that believes we are not only 100% responsible for our lives but also a 100% responsible for the lives of others (I know, that is a big one to swallow). If someone makes you aware of an issue in their life, there’s a reason for it and you’re responsible for working on it. Take Action: The thought of 100% responsibility need not be overwhelming if we just take everything back to basics and evaluate our next behavior, conversation, plan and thought by asking ourselves:
When we get down to it - it’s not about the Economy … it’s about You We all know people who have lived pay-check to pay-check their whole life and all of a sudden it’s the economy that has created their financial situation. That’s their excuse anyway, they’re jumping on the bandwagon and it seems a lot more justifiable than, “Yeah, I never have enough money because I make thousands of choices everyday that point me in the direction of lack instead of prosperity.” Even if you have noticed a difference in your situation it’s important to understand that it is not something ‘out there’ that is creating your circumstances but your thoughts and beliefs in relation to your abundance. So the next time you feel inclined to blame the economy, your boss, education and circumstances remind yourself that you create your reality. There are many opportunities available; you just have to focus on them. We all know people who seem to thrive no matter what the economic climate. You can be one of them.
